Strategic initiatives protecting Manitoba's diverse ecosystems and wildlife for future generations.
Targeted conservation strategies addressing Manitoba's most critical habitat needs
Manitoba's native prairies are among the most threatened ecosystems in North America. Less than 1% of original tallgrass prairie remains. Our Prairie Conservation Program works to protect, restore, and manage these vital grasslands that support hundreds of plant and animal species.
Wetlands are nature's kidneysโfiltering water, controlling floods, and providing critical habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. Manitoba has lost an estimated 70% of its historic wetlands. Our program focuses on reversing this loss through restoration and protection.
Healthy wildlife populations depend on healthy habitats. Our Wildlife Protection Program focuses on species at risk and the ecosystems they depend on. We use science-based approaches to monitor populations and implement recovery strategies.
Conservation succeeds when communities are involved and supportive. Our Community Engagement Program builds relationships with landowners, Indigenous communities, schools, and the general public to foster a conservation ethic across Manitoba.
Effective conservation requires sound science. Our Research & Monitoring Program conducts and supports scientific studies to understand ecosystem dynamics, measure conservation outcomes, and inform adaptive management strategies.
Climate change is already affecting Manitoba's ecosystems. Our Climate Resilience Program focuses on building adaptive capacity into landscapes and helping wildlife and habitats adjust to changing conditions through nature-based solutions.
